Deserts, ice fields and luxury hotels
Chile is a land of extremes. Spanning over 4,200 kilometres from north to south, the incredible scenic and cultural diversity of the country is truly mind-blowing. In the north, harsh deserts, windswept dunes and salt flats dominate the landscape, whilst in the heart of the country near its capital, Santiago, fertile valleys produce some of the best wines in the world. To the south is the pristine beauty of Patagonia, filled with towering peaks, iconic glaciers, brilliant fjords and Cape Horn, which marked lands’ end for centuries.
Sandwiched between the snow-capped Atlas Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santiago is one of South America’s most energetic, cosmopolitan and sophisticated cities. Filled with world class museums, restaurants and fascinating neighbourhoods, it is a wonderful city to visit. Stroll through quirky neighbourhoods that each have their own unique flavour, such as Lastarria and Providencia. During the day enjoy the relaxed vibe, parkland, architecture, cafes and cobblestoned streets before experiencing the vibrant nightlife, quiet bars and delectable restaurants.
The Atacama Deserts is one of the most surreal places on the planet, offering astounding contrasts, from stark deserts with sweeping dunes and steaming geysers to dramatic wind sculpted mountains and gorges, vast lagoons and salt flats. The oasis village of San Pedro de Atacama, at an altitude of 2,400metres above sea-level is the ideal location to explore the region. Close to a magnificent chain of Andean volcanoes, the Moon Valley, flamingo reserves, Altiplanic villages and the famous Atacama salt flats, there are a plethora of activities on offer.
Discover the splendour of Patagonia’s jaw-dropping Torres del Paine (Towers of Paine) National Park, dominated by the three immense granite spires which give the park its name. Staying at renowned Singular Patagonia (a former cold storage plant turned luxury hotel) explore this incredible region by bicycle, horseback, 4WD or on foot. This remarkable landscape is covered with mountains, fjords, glaciers and crystal clear lakes. The area is also rich in wildlife, with alpine forests teeming with rare birdlife, and the open steppes grazed by guanaco (a relative of the llama) and rhea (flightless bird). Tracking the elusive Puma, the world’s largest mountain lion, is also an option. Click here for more details. Returning to your glamorous accommodation each day to indulge in fine dining and wine tastings after working up an appetite exploring this pristine wilderness. The hotel also features its own fascinating museum, which still houses the original century-old industrial machinery.
