Tarangire National Park

Situated in the Great Rift Valley 118km from Arusha, Tarangire National Park features very different scenery to the Serengeti and other parks in the north.

Featuring a hot, dry climate and semi-arid grasslands punctuated with peculiar ‘upside down’ baobab trees, flat-topped acacias and red termite mounds, Tarangire supports a large number of rare species you don’t see in the other reserves.

Its 2,850 square kilometres harbour gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx, and in the dry season (July to September) the permanent waters of the Tarangire River are a magnet for plains game from the park’s parched outskirts.

Large prides of lion are common here, as well as leopard, cheetah and hyena attracted by the abundant prey. Elephants in herds up to 300 strong and graceful southern giraffe are also key features of this park.

Location

Tarangire Highlights

  • Strange, captivating landscapes completely unlike the Serengeti
  • Ancient baobab trees
  • Grasslands dotted with red termite mounds
  • Rare species not found in Tanzania’s northern parks
  • Enormous elephant herds and mighty prides of lion
  • Plentiful plains game including zebra, buffalo and kudu
  • Attendant predators including leopard and cheetah

When To Go

The dry season (June to September) is when most of the waterholes have dried up, so wildlife come from all corners of the park to drink along the Tarangire River. While this means good viewing and fine weather for tourists, it can also mean that the park and its lodges can be busy. Rain falls mostly between November and May. While this means wildlife is trickier to spot amid all the greenery, rates are lower and the birding outstanding.

Tanzania Overview

Why Tanzania: Few places in the world can offer the immense diversity and quantity of game found in Tanzania, nor the ease of viewing it. Tanzania is also the arena for the great wildebeest and zebra migration and has some of Africa’s most stunning scenery.

Game Viewing: The best time to visit is November to May when the wildebeest herds amass on the Serengeti’s southern plains. Feb/Mar is when the herds are calving. The dry season (Jun to Sep) is the best time to visit Tarangire and the Selous.

Culture: With some 120 tribes, Tanzania is culturally very diverse, with peoples ranging from the Nilotic Maasai to Hadza bushmen, the Makonde (famous for their wood carvings) and Swahili-speaking coast-dwellers, some descended from Arabs.

Climate: Much of the Serengeti is over 5,000 ft so temperatures vary between 22°- 29°C. It is generally sunny and windy, with rain falling between Nov – May as isolated showers. The low-lying Rift Valley is much hotter (30°-35°C), while the coast is hot and humid. The Ngorongoro Highlands can be cool to cold at night.

Combine With: Kenya. Most visitors arrive via Nairobi in Kenya so it is easy to combine parks in the two countries. Kenya’s famous Masai Mara is an extension of the Serengeti and the wildebeest migration can be found here in September/October.

Getting There: You can fly via Johannesburg in South Africa then north to Nairobi in Kenya. Or fly via the Middle East to Nairobi. We can organise road transfers from there to Arusha, the “safari capital” of northern Tanzania; alternatively, you can fly into Kilimanjaro Airport.
