Giraffe Manor

This unique boutique hotel is set on 12 private acres in the affluent, leafy suburb of Langata. Built in 1932 as a colonial hunting lodge, today Giraffe Manor is a Nairobi icon and offers one of the city’s most special experiences.

Visitors often remark that stepping onto the property is akin to entering a scene from the film “Out of Africa”. The 10 guestrooms at the property certainly bring to mind an earlier era, with their charming antiques, canopied beds and classic Baroque furniture.

However, the thing that sets Giraffe Manor truly apart is its herd of endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, who are known to join guests for breakfast or for a cheeky snack through open windows or doors. When you aren’t busy feeding and walking with these long-legged residents, there’s plenty to do. Go visit the baby elephants at Daphne Sheldrick’s Animal Orphanage, see author Karen Blixen’s former home (now a museum) and come back to Giraffe Manor in time for traditional afternoon tea on the terrace.

How to get to Giraffe Manor

Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is around 40 minutes (29km) from Giraffe Manor in moderate traffic, while the drive to Wilson Airport (13km) takes approximately half this time.

Kenya Overview

Why Kenya: Since the early 19th century Kenya has captivated visitors with its astounding quantity and diversity of wildlife as well as with its majestic scenery. The country has well-established tourist infrastructure and a good standard of accommodation.

Game Viewing: Excellent game-viewing year round. Jul-Sep is popular when the wildebeest migration is in the Masai Mara.

Culture: Maasai and Samburu pastoralists who continue their traditional way of life.

Climate: Temperate climate (22°- 25°C) due to high altitude but hot in low-lying areas like the Rift Valley (30°- 35°C). Hot and humid along the coast. “Long rains” take place in Apr/May, whilst “short rains” occur in mid-Oct to mid-Dec.

Combine With: Tanzania, which is situated on Kenya’s southern border and is easily reached by road or air from Nairobi. Mt Kilimanjaro straddles the two countries and Kenya’s Masai Mara is part of Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem, the arena for the wildebeest migration.

Getting There: The gateway to Kenya is Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Nairobi is linked by daily air services from Australia via the UAE or Qatar in the Middle East or via Johannesburg in South Africa.
