Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Long before the car was invented, early explorers such as David Livingstone traversed Africa on foot – risky without a good guide! These days, walking safaris with a reputable operator are simply exciting opportunities to stretch your legs and feel the African soil beneath your feet.
With 16 lodges in key wilderness areas, eight from where walks are offered, Sanctuary Retreats provides unsurpassed luxury in outstanding natural settings. Their impeccable safety record and wildlife tracking expertise guarantee a memorable experience.
Where You Can Participate
This truly diverse environment of islands, swamps, channels and lakes is ideally explored on foot, by vehicle and dugout canoe (mokoro). For different perspectives of the varied landscape, combine Sanctuary Chief’s, Baines’ and Stanley’s camps. The latter two occupy private concessions that permit walking, while Stanley’s unique habituated elephants allow close observation while going about their daily business.
South Luangwa National Park
Track wildlife from Sanctuary Puku Ridge Camp in Zambia’s prolific South Luangwa National Park, spiritual birthplace of walking safaris. This remote reserve is home to an incredible array of game, and is consistently rated one of the best places in Africa to see leopards.
To visit Victoria Falls, include Sussi & Chuma in your Zambian itinerary. Built on a beautiful, quiet bend on the Zambezi River just 12km upstream of the celebrated falls, it is also the only property that offers guided walks in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
Vehicle-based gameviewing in Kenya’s famed Masai Mara often means smaller inhabitants of this renowned ecosystem are overlooked. Inspect anthills, learn how to recognise birds by song and identify animals by spoor at Sanctuary Olonana on informative strolls.
Tarangire National Park
Sanctuary Swala is a rare camp in Tarangire National Park – known for its iconic baobabs and strange beauty – where rambles through the grassland are possible.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
Atmospheric Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp provides unrivalled access to the mountain gorillas of dramatic Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. As the only concessionaire luxury camp in this wilderness, guests may even be treated to a visit by these famous primates. Observe rare rainforest species while traversing a fantastic landscape of waterfalls, volcanoes and lakes. You may even have the opportunity to interact with local Batwa Pygmies.
Madikwe Game Reserve
This malaria-free reserve is home to Sanctuary Makanyane, where you can uncover the ‘Big 5’ – including both black and white rhino – away from the noise and dust of 4WDs. Accompanied by an armed guide, you’ll follow animal trails and appreciate the finer nuances of the bush.
Please note that guests under age 16 are not permitted on walks whilst guests over age 65 may be required to produce a medical certificate stating that they are fit to participate.
