Zimbabwe Safaris and Tours

Zimbabwe’s wonderful national parks offer some of the most spectacular gameviewing in Africa.

Despite the difficulties the country has experienced in recent years, our ground operators and all recently returning clients report that the wildlife is flourishing and the gameviewing still magnificent. Of course, no visit to Zimbabwe is complete without the majestic Victoria Falls.

The lodges we use in Zimbabwe operate successfully in areas far from any political strife and we have great confidence in recommending them.

Apart from traditional gameviewing by 4WD, Zimbabwe is also renowned for walking safaris and for canoeing safaris along the Zambezi River. Of course, you must also visit the impressive Victoria Falls.

Zimbabwe Safari Highlights

Magnificent Mana Pools National Park

Mana Pools National Park is one of our favourite places in all of Africa. Bordering the mighty Zambezi River, it has both amazing scenery and spectacular wildlife.

With stunning views of the Zambezi Escarpment, the river, islands, seasonal pools, sandbanks and majestic forests of mahogany, ebony and wild fig are home to large populations of elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile and lion. A World Heritage Site, the park is renowned for canoeing and walking safaris, led by highly trained guides. This is one of the best places in Africa to view game on foot, in particular large bull elephants which have become accustomed to walkers and canoeists.

Victoria Falls

The magnificent Victoria Falls are on the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Falls plummet 108 metres into a deep gorge, creating clouds of spray.

This spray can be seen for many kilometres, hence the local name “Mosi-oa-Tunya” or “The Smoke that Thunders”. There are plenty of good hotels to choose from close to the Falls. Popular activities include a helicopter flight over the Falls, a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River, white water rafting below the Falls, and even a picnic lunch on Livingstone Island. Alternatively, spend a day doing conservation work in the Zambezi NP on our Wildlife Conservation and Awareness Safari.

Upper Zambezi Wildlife

The Upper Zambezi River between Victoria Falls and the Botswana border has a number of private wildlife reserves within close proximity to the Falls.

Guests at these reserves can enjoy game drives by open 4WD, boat cruises or canoeing on the river as well as night drives with spotlights to search for nocturnal animals. Birdlife is prolific and you can see animals like elephant, kudu, giraffe, lion and wild dog. From exclusive Elephant Camp you can also enjoy a unique close-up elephant encounter.

Hwange National Park

Zimbabwe’s largest national park, Hwange is a wilderness teeming with wildlife easily reached by road or air from Victoria Falls.

Situated along the Botswana border in northwestern Zimbabwe, this famous park supports 105 species of mammal, over 400 species of birds, and one of Africa’s largest populations of elephant, as well as endangered species like gemsbok, brown hyena and wild dog. Our selection of game lodges and tented camps includes small intimate camps in private concessions within the park, so that you are close to all the action. The advantage of being on a private concession means you are not just confined to game drives but can also enjoy night drives and walks with an armed guide.

Lake Kariba

Beautiful Lake Kariba is famous for both its stunning scenery, as well as its great wildlife and bird-viewing opportunities.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Zambezi Escarpment, the parks and wildlife concessions in this area feature big game like lion and elephant, as well as plains game, hippo and crocodile. The lodges we recommend here are of a high standard with excellent guiding. Guests can enjoy game drives by open 4WD as well as by boat or canoe on the lake. Half day walking safaris with a professional guide are also available.

Zambezi Canoeing Safaris

Experience the adventure of canoeing down the mighty Zambezi River through some of Africa’s most beautiful wilderness.

Imagine the thrill as your canoe passes close to a herd of elephant drinking and bathing in the river, or a pod of hippo wallowing in the shallows. No method of travel could bring you closer to the beauty and remoteness of the African bush. We offer two styles of canoeing: participation safaris with standard camping accompanied by qualified canoe guides, or full service classic style camping accompanied by fully licensed professional guides who can also conduct walks.

Walking Safaris

Feel the pulse of Africa on a walking safari with one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced guides. This is one of the best ways to experience the true essence of the bush.

Zimbabwe is renowned for its high standard of professional guiding and a safari with one of these highly trained guides makes for thrilling and memorable encounters with Africa’s wildlife. Track elephant or buffalo, learn about local plants, their medicinal uses and how complex ecosystems depend on all creatures from the tiniest insects to the biggest of game. Full service safaris are accompanied by a guide, camp crew and cook. The best national parks for walking are Mana Pools, Hwange and Zambezi. See also Canoeing Safaris above for canoeing and walking options.

Zimbabwe Overview

Why Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe offers amazing wildlife experiences, from the safari parks and reserves along the mighty Zambezi River and Lake Kariba to the vast wilderness of Hwange National Park. The jewel in the country’s crown is the spectacular Victoria Falls. The country has a long history and the ancient stone city of Great Zimbabwe gave the country its name.

Best time to go: The dry season (May-Oct) is the best time for gameviewing as the bush dries out and game congregates at the precious remaining waterholes. Late in the dry season, there will be much less water going over the Victoria Falls, whilst at the height of summer there will be a lot of spray and it may be more difficult to see the falls.

Culture: Zimbabweans are known for their rich culture, dance and music traditions. They are also recognised for their fine art and craft including basketware, pottery and the famous Shona stone sculptures. The two main tribes are the Shona and the Matabele.

Climate: Moderate climate (22°-29°C) though hotter in the Zambezi Valley and around the Victoria Falls where temperatures can reach 40°C. The dry season is from May-Oct when almost no rain falls and the days are warm and sunny. Nights can be very cold with sub-zero temperatures from Jun-Aug. Oct is the hottest month. Rain falls regularly in the summer (Nov-Mar/Apr) turning the bush lush and green.

Combine With: Zambia, Botswana or South Africa. Chobe National Park in Botswana is just across the border and can be easily reached by road from Victoria Falls. Zambia and the town of Livingstone is across the river from Victoria Falls.

Getting There: Fly from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls. Alternatively you can easily take a road transfer from Livingstone in Zambia or from Botswana. For an Edwardian-style, luxury rail experience travel by Rovos Rail from Pretoria in South Africa to Victoria Falls.
