Crossing the Southern Ocean into deep Antarctica has challenged even the best sailors, but is well worth the adventure. The remote Ross Sea is the site of historic huts left by the polar explorers Scott and Shackleton as well as abundant wildlife, whilst the Commonwealth Bay region is an area rich in exploration history including Sir Douglas Mawson’s hut, as well as breathtaking vistas of icebergs, penguins, diverse birdlife and seals. The Sub-Antarctic Islands include Snares, Auckland and Campbell Islands, plus the World Heritage site of Macquarie Island, home to 3 million Royal Penguins and hundreds of thousands of King Penguins.
